The Secnurse is particularly suited to special care wards in hospitals and care homes  where private rooms are reserved for dementia and Alzheimer patients and people at risk from falls. The system when installed requires no maintenance or specialist knowledge. Care staff simply use the remote control to arm and disarm the system. There are no sensor mats or other items that require sterilization when patients are discharged or moved to another room.

Another function of the Secnurse that can be utilized is the ability to detect another person approaching the users bed. When the Secnurse is armed ready for use, it only holds off the alarm for the person laying on the bed. Another wandering patient entering the bed protected zone will cause the alarm to operate.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The Secnurse bed occupancy monitor, uses  Hi-Tech digital image processing to detect when a person leaves their bed. No bed pressure mat sensors or floor mat sensors  are used. Note: There are no still, or video camera images generated of the patient in bed so there is no invasion of privacy.

The Secnurse Fig 1. is secured to a wall at the bed head or side wall if the bed is against a wall using the multi-angle bracket Fig 2. supplied. The Secnurse uses camera optics to form an image of the bed (without the patient laying on it first) that is used to create and store an image of an empty bed FIG 4. This is set up using a remote control Fig 3. This is a one-time procedure for the bed to be monitored.

When setup is complete, the patient  lays on the bed. The caregiver uses the  remote control to arm the system as they leave the room Fig 5. The Secnurse then recognises a second image superimposed over the empty bed image and holds off the alarm outputs. There are two selectable alarm levels:

1. The patients sits on the edge of the bed. Fig 6.

2. The patient stands up and walks away from the bed. Fig 7.

The remote control enables alarm output type to be set:

0 - Alarm output triggered instantly

3 min's - Alarm delayed for three minutes

5 min's - Alarm delayed for five minutes

10 min's - Alarm delayed for 10 minutes

20 min's - Alarm delayed for 20 minutes

When the alarm is set with a delay, if the patient returns to their bed before the delay has expired the alarm will be cancelled. This feature is useful if the person has to use the toilet during the night. Care staff will not receive an alarm call unnecessarily. The delay feature is utilised even further in the special adaptations section that covers alarms for people living at home alone requiring remote care and for people with medical conditions at risk when alone.

The following alarm options are available:

Direct connection into a commercial nurse call system for care homes and hospital special care units.

Remote signal transmitted to caregiver pager

Alarm sent via telephone auto dialler to up to six         emergency contact numbers.

The SecNurse is supplied with all necessary connection cables, fixings, remote control batteries, detailed instruction manual and power supply.
